IDA Comes to San Marcos and DKG
DKG in San Marcos and IDA, International Dyslexia Association, presented Filmmaker James Redford and examines how dyslexia affects youths and their families through the experiences of dyslexic students and the work of Drs. Sally and Bennett Shaywitz. Teachers, administrators, parents and students in San Marcos, Kyle, Wimberley and surrounding communities came together to see the presentation on Dyslexia, “The Big Picture” at the Price Center in San Marcos.
Special accounts of the dyslexic experience from children, experts, and iconic leaders at the top of their fields in Dyslexia helped explain and understand that dyslexia, a persistent problem with learning to read, can be as great a gift as it sometimes is an obstacle.
Nu Chapter, Nelda Reyes, dyslexia specialist and IDA board member introduced panel discussion which included Clarissa Talbert, Special Education and Dyslexia Coordinator, NU Chapter Member; Superintendent of SMCISD, Michael Cardona, along with other experts in the field were available for the panel discussion answering questions afterwards.
In coming Nu President, Tanya Rhodes and Connie Martin-Thompson, both Nu Chapter member and Dyslexia Specialist represented DKG recruiting new members and passing out information.
It was a successful evening for San Marcos, IDA, DKG and Dyslexia coming together as a team. (Connie Martin-Thompson)

2017 State Convention Slideshow
On Sunday, April 9, 2017, I was awarded the Citizenship Education Award for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. I have won at the local level which I will receive in May, but the one I received on Sunday was for District 5 of the VFW. By being the district winner, my name advances to the state level. This was presented to me for the work I do promoting our Veterans and the hard work that goes into the Veteran's program that I have been chairing for years.
I am pictured with District 5 Auxiliary President, Merlene Peters and District 5 Commander, Ronald Spalding. This award holds a special place in my heart as I remind my students each and every day that they are sitting in their classrooms and enjoy their freedoms because of those veterans and those who are currently serving in the military. (Cheryl Blake)

INTERNATIONAL WORLD FELLOWSHIP
The World Fellowship Program began in 1946 at the National Convention in San Francisco as a project to aid women in war-torn countries. Four German women educators received funds from Delta Kappa Gamma to spend eight weeks of study in Sweden during the spring of 1948. The current program began in 1960 with an initial award of $2,500.00. World Fellowships are given annually to nonmembers from countries other than Canada and the United States to attend college/university in Canada or the U.S.
An agreement was made with the Institute of International Education to provide dossiers from which a Society committee could select recipients for study in the United States. The World Fellowship Committee maintains contact with recipients for the duration of their studies when possible. Delta Kappa Gamma chapters are encouraged to establish contact with recipients studying in their states. To date, 917 women in 120 countries have received awards totaling $3,276,200.00 Contributions and bequests determine the number of World Fellowship Awards given each year. In 2015, a total of $83,200.00 was awarded to 26 women from nonmember countries: 20 initial awards totaled $80,000
6 extensions totaled $3,200;00
The proceeds from Nu chapter's November silent auction will go to support the World Fellowship Fund. (Report by Carol Grimm.)
The November, 2015, auction raised almost $300.00 for the World Fellowship Fund!
Nu Chapter members went to visit the five ladies who live in Wimberley Life Care, and took each of them an early Christmas gift! Members made lap quilts and pillows for each of the ladies. Christmas socks and year planners were added to the gifts. The following slide show shows the highlights of the evening which culminated with the ladies and Nu members singing Christmas songs, much to everyone's delight!
Mary Anne, one of the residents of Wimberly Life Care with whom we shared Christmas, passed away recently. We were so blessed to share her last Christmas with her.
Melba Holberg, soon to be 98, got a visit from the Delta Kappa Gamma ladies who were bearing gifts for all the Wimberley Life Care ladies. Chapter president and close family friend Sandra Morales has been under Melba's tutelage for years--learning hula, ukulele, and general performance techniques. Melba is quite the director. Look there, sit here, sing that, SMILE!
Afternoon Delight
by Sandra Morales
Call it Connections, Networking, Friendships, all words to describe DKG ladies. Sunday (October 4, 2015) afternoon was all about those words and more as we gathered at the San Marcos Public Library for our Prospective Members Reception.
Your Nu officers outdid themselves, setting up a beautiful refreshment table with a variety of delicious homemade cookies, homemade red rose mints, mixed nuts and punch. Special thanks to all of them: Kathy Carriker, Loretta Eiben, Robin Estepp, Charlotte Evans, Tonda Frady, Sandra Morales and Barbara Pevoto.
The Membership Committee prepared a wonderful presentation and a welcoming table, for all guests and members. Thanks go to Membership Chair, Evelyn Barrett and her committee members, Robin Estepp and Jenny Turney. The three of them assisted Past State President, Joanne Davis, who drove in from Fredericksburg for the event. The team showed International’s Pride in the Big Picture power point presentation, with additional photos of our members at meetings, workshops and state conventions.
We each learned a little more about each other as Joanne asked everyone to introduce themselves and say how they came to be in Delta Kappa Gamma and/or how they have been influenced by the society. And, we also learned a little about our lovely prospective members. All the gained knowledge showed us that we are all connected to each other in some way, whether it be by mutual acquaintances, teachers, similar interests or through our being who we are—women educators!
After the presentation, Joanne passed out brochures and information forms to the prospective members. Each form had a few questions. One question asked if they were interested in becoming members. All said YES! So, get ready for we will have an initiation in November.
If you missed our Afternoon Delight, you will not want to miss our Initiation when you can see for yourself what nice ladies will be joining our society and chapter. I hope you will be there to welcome them into our fold.

Some ideas and questions which will be addressed in the new Collegial Exchange which will be coming out later this month,
The new Collegial Exchange will reach members’ mailboxes in late November! The attached is for your use in alerting members of your state organization to be on the lookout for this inaugural issue AND to encourage members to consider contributing to the magazine themselves! The next deadline is December 15, 2015, and submissions should be sent to [email protected]
The Exchange focuses on practical tips for the classroom and for DKG; on sharing viewpoints on educational and DKG topics; and on providing a place for creative expression. In particular, the editorial board hopes that the magazine will be a place to exchange ideas about “controversial” topics such as:
Are national standards productive? Is technology helping or hurting education? Are traditional grades a thing of the past? Would year-round, 4-day school weeks advance education? How much homework is necessary? What is the proper role of schools in promoting students’ health and morality? Should school boards be eliminated to give educators autonomy?
Should the name of DKG be changed? What are the advantages of recruitment vs. invitation only? What DKG myths need to be debunked? Should college education majors be invited to DKG? What might be the advantages of membership at only the international or only the state level? Should the Society take political stands?

The following is an update on our members who have been impacted by the Blanco River/Wimberley flood.
Mary Nabers and her family are in cleaning/sorting mode at her place. She said she had 2 feet of water in her house, in Blanco, and everything was a mess. But, she is thankful she and her dogs are fine. She is staying with one of her sons for now.
Cynthia Marion, one of our newest initiates (May 19, 2015) had 7 feet of water in her house in Wimberley, and said that what didn’t wash out the doors and windows is pretty much all ruined. She is staying with her daughter in Austin.
Most everyone else is okay. Lots of water, all around, but no damage to homes or lives.
The following letter was sent from TSO President Nancy Newman regarding the loss of the Van ISD Elementary School in the recent tornado.
I know that undoubtedly Texas' Delta Kappa Gamma members are the most generous and open hearted women in the world. Remember how several chapters rallied to help West ISD after the fertilizer factory explosion? Then last year, Panhandle chapters spun into action to help Post ISD when their elementary school burned.
Our chapters quickly and lovingly respond and share as they can. Realistically, we know Texas will continue to suffer such disasters as this in the future and Texas State Organization chapters will be ready to assist. Another example of this caring has occurred and I would like to share it with you.
Beta Omega Chapter in Area 1 is ready to help Van ISD recover from the tornado which destroyed the Van Elementary School earlier this week. The chapter wants to help the teachers with providing teacher supplies and helping outfit/decorate their rooms for the fall semester. Classes for Pre-K through third grade have been cancelled for the rest of this school year, as the town begins to recover.
Beta Omega along with AC Belinda Lowrance are ready to help the teachers recover from the tornado that totally destroyed their school building. Betty Wilson, president of Beta Omega talked today with Marty Moore, principal of the school concerning what is needed and how to handle the help.
Would you please share the information with your chapters? I know many chapters in the East Texas area will definitely be interested in assisting, and thought there might be other chapters which would possibly want to help.
Ms Moore suggest not sending actual teacher supplies, instead she suggest checks made out to Van ISD and on the memo line write: Van Elementary Teachers. She believes this way, the monies can be evenly divided among the affected teachers, and each can purchase what he/she desire. Also, they can use school vouchers this way and it will be tax deductible, thus they can get more for the money. She discourages gift cards as she feels there is no accountability as to how they are spent. Ms Moore was thrilled with the idea of our helping the teachers outfit their rooms as each wishes.
Checks should be sent to Beta Omega President Betty Wilson, 440 VZCR 1507, Grand Saline, TX 75140. Mrs. Wilson will keep a running account of monies received in the coming weeks and deliver the checks to the Van Administration Office as they arrive. You will find her email address : [email protected] , so you can contact her personally if you wish to do so.
Thanks for your help in spreading this appeal. AND a special thanks to Beta Omega members for coming up with this plan of action.
